More Than 500 Pigs Are Confiscated From Farmers in the Vladimir Region Because of African Swine Fever

Animal owners are entitled to monetary compensation

Eight outbreaks of African swine fever were registered in the Vladimir region: two in farms in Kameshkovsky district, another six – in private households of residents of Vladimir, Kameshkovsky, Petushinsky, Selivanovsky and Muromsky districts. In all cases, quarantine was declared on the territories.

After withdrawal of 276 animals farmers were paid monetary compensation from the regional budget totaling 5.1 million rubles. Similar measures are being taken in Kameshkovsky district, where it is planned to take away 300 animals. Another 11.3 million rubles will be needed for payments.

As for causes of ASF outbreaks, officially the White House reports the following:

  • in Vladimir, Petushinsky and Kameshkovsky districts the owners of animals used contaminated wastes of meat processing of unknown origin, as well as violated veterinary rules of maintenance and sale of pigs;
  • in Selivanovsky and Muromsky districts, the exact causes have not been established. Wild boars or feeding animals with thermally untreated food waste could have become the source of infection.

Until October a working group will appear in the region, which will include heads of local authorities, as well as employees of Rosselkhoznadzor and the Department of Agriculture. Its tasks will include preventing the emergence of sources of ASF.
