New Bison Are Living in the Klyazmensko-Lukhsky Reserve

When the animals came out to the feeder, they were counted

In Vyazniki district, the directorate of the Klyazmensko-Lukhskiy wildlife sanctuary started counting the red-listed bison. The animals are counted when they come out to the feeding trough. This usually happens by the end of winter.

“This year the bison came to the feeding ground almost in their entirety at the beginning of winter. The herd had a little surprise. A very small calf, born in the fall, came to the feeder.

Pregnancy lasts the same length as for humans, i.e. nine months. Accordingly, the calf was born in August-September. As of today, there are over 70 heads in the herd and this number is not final yet. Ahead we plan the traditional counts conducted by the staff of the Directorate of Protected Areas together with volunteers, search for herds and strays who do not come to the feeding ground”, – writes Julia Buyanova, a volunteer and biologist, in her blog.

In 2022, the bison herd of the Klyazmensko-Lukhsky Reserve was increased by 17 individuals. For comparison, in 2017 there were about 50 heads. And in total (data for 2020) there are 8461 individuals of bison, of which free – 6244, semi-free – 479 and aviary – 1738.

The bison is a relict animal that inhabited our forests 36,000 to 28,000 years ago, but then was gradually completely exterminated in the wild. All bison available today are the descendants of 12 survivors in zoos around the world.
