The court sentenced Alexei Navalny to nine years in prison (the prosecution had asked for 13). According to the verdict, he will serve his sentence in a maximum security penal colony. He will also have to pay a fine of 1.2 million rubles. This was reported by RAPSI.
On March 22 the Lefortovo District Court in Moscow found Navalny guilty of large-scale fraud in a case concerning the theft of donations to his structures (which are now included in the register of foreign agents; they are considered extremist and are banned in Russia). In addition, the opposition leader was found guilty of disrespecting the judge who considered the case of slandering the veteran.
The convicted politician has been serving his sentence for over a year in Vladimir region, in Pokrovsky prison No. 2, where the Lefortovo court held an off-site hearing.
Navalny ended up in the penal colony after his suspended sentence was commuted to actual imprisonment in the “Yves Rocher” case. The reason was a violation of the order of serving a suspended sentence. The oppositionist was supposed to spend two years and eight months in prison, but now this term was increased.
In January 2022, Rosfinmonitoring added Navalny to the register of terrorists and extremists.
